Then von Trier and Dunst would meet to see if Dunst was a good fit for the role.
“We met through Skype, and it was a pretty easygoing, pleasant meeting.” We didn’t even chat about the script much before our Skype connection went down and we had to contact each other. It was really like the simplest—for the director that he is, it was like the simplest work that I had in a long time, it was so straightforward, it was just like, ‘Yes, I’d love you to be in my movie.’ ‘Great, I’d love to be in it,’ remarked Dunst on Interview.
Why Was Kirsten Dunst Scared Of Working With Lars Von Trier
Despite accepting von Trier’s invitation, Dunst admits to being nervous about working with him. When it came to working with actors, Von Trier’s reputation preceded him. According to The Guardian, after working with von Trier, actor Björk pledged never to work in the film industry again. With the filmmaker’s reputation in mind, Dunst admitted that she felt conflicted about working with him.
“I was afraid to work with Lars because everyone was making such a big fuss about how he tortures females,” Dunst once claimed on Virgin Media (via Digital Spy).
However, this would alter when Dunst spent time with von Trier. This would allow Dunst to find a side of the filmmaker that would set her fears at ease.
“When I first met him, I was astonished by some of the things he said, but you don’t make the movies he makes with a PC personality.” But instead, I discovered a compassionate, witty, and kind director who was emotionally aware. “He has a thing for ladies,” she added.
Dunst once speculated that von Trier’s perspective throughout their collaboration was another reason she had an easier experience.
“I believe it had something to do with where he was in his life.” “I knew he was in a good position for us, so there wasn’t—yeah, he was really nice to deal with,” she reasoned.

Working with the Nymphomaniac filmmaker on a personal level allowed Dunst to get to know von Trier in a manner that others did not. While von Trier is notorious for his eccentricities, Dunst believes the real von Trier was quite quiet.
“He’ll say weird things to people or in conversation,” she said in a 2011 interview with Reuters. “And he’s nervous in front of press. I remember when he was posing in Cannes. He had gotten a tattoo [on his knuckles] that said ‘F***,’ and he was holding it out, but literally his hand was shaking when he was posing for pictures. This is the Lars that people don’t know. He’s doing these provocative things, but also he’s [a] nervous wreck up there.”
