On Season 12 of MasterChef: Back to Win, Yu topped the competition. When she first competed on MasterChef Juniors at the age of 12 and eventually returned to take home the title eight years later, she became a breakthrough celebrity. She explained to Showbiz Cheat Sheet that her lifelong love of cooking stems from her love of food.

Growing up, I was always a really experimental eater, she said. “Like my mother still has her 40th birthday video. At age three, I used to eat bugs. I attended a preschool where each month we learned about a different culture, their food, and other things like attending opera. And when I was around five or six, I developed a fascination with escargot. And whenever we went to a restaurant, I always wanted to get escargot.

Dara Was Influenced By Her Grandmother And Family’s Passion For Creativity

According to MasterChef Dara Yu, her passion of cooking is greatly influenced by her family. She mentioned that her grandmother had previously instructed traditional Chinese cookery at a community college in South Bend, Indiana. So her love of eating had a big impact on [me]. And I’ve always enjoyed cooking for my family in the kitchen. And I attended cookery schools, where I immediately felt at home.

The arts have long been valued in her family. She stated, “I come from a highly creative family. My sister is a creative. For 20 years, my mother was a fashion designer. My father was also an architect. Consequently, using food as a creative expression is what I do.

She enjoys using baking as a way to express herself, especially when she can make confectionery works of art. Going to culinary school and having the means to acquire all of these particular talents was extremely exciting, she added. “My last two semesters were devoted to developing specific abilities, such as creating wedding cakes or gum paste flowers, among other things, mirror glaze cakes, chocolates, and confections. I have observed and admired pastry cooks who are able to achieve it, but I lacked the means to actually study.

She Loves Wontons … And Puffer Fish Could Be A Challenge For Dara Yu

What are Yu’s favorite items to use or foods that she enjoys making, then? “I adore cooking stews, curries, and other dishes that allow me to add layers and different tastes. But I also like to make comfort food like wontons, dumplings, and similar dishes,” she said. “It makes me think of baking with my grandmother. So, yes, that is unquestionably a go-to. followed by cakes. I adore making pastries and desserts.

Is there anything that would trip her up when it comes to ingredients? She said extremely exotic ingredients might leave this MasterChef winner scratching her head. “There are some proteins that are pretty tricky like puffer fish and eel sometimes,” she pondered. “And some of these pretty unique ingredients that are more culturally kind of specific. Certain cultures will eat them, but it has to be prepared in a certain way. With puffer fish, it’s poisonous unless you cook it the right way. So I think things like that. But I mean, I think I could figure it out.”
