Kanye West Once Turned Down The Chance To Sign Kid Cudi
West was probably aware of Kid Cudi before many other people were. Cudi met West by happenstance while shopping for records. Despite Cudi’s triumph, it was an encounter he will never forget.
“At Virgin Megastore, I was looking at CDs that I couldn’t buy, and he was standing right next to me looking at CDs… that he could buy,” he told MTV News once.
Cudi would introduce himself to West, who would then try to persuade the Grammy winner to sign him.
I didn’t have a pitch, Cudi said. I was just a young person asking, “Can you sign me?” But West opted out. Cudi recalled West saying, “Unless you on some Biggie and Tupac-type stuff,” to him.
Cudi did, though, succeed in making an impression on West that day. At least enough for West to inquire about Cudi’s name. Cudi informed West, “My rap name is Kid Cudi, so be checking for me.

Kid Cudi would eventually realize his ambition of becoming a successful musician. As a result, Cudi collaborated with his idol, Kanye West, on multiple songs. “Make Her Say,” “The Joy,” and “Erase Me” were just a handful of the hit songs written by the two singers. Cudi, on the other hand, didn’t like being on one of West’s songs.
Kanye West’s blockbuster album Yeezus was released in 2013. Guilt Trip, one of the songs on the critically praised album, featured Cudi’s vocals. However, in a 2014 interview with Complex, Cudi stated that he had no idea his vocals would be used in the song. Not to mention the album.
Cudi admitted that the song’s vocals were from a few years ago. “I can’t remember the session, but it was simply a reference. Twitter is how I found out I was in the song. I was like, “What the f*** is everyone talking about when I saw kids coming up to me and asking, ‘Are you on ‘Guilt Trip!’ or saying, ‘Great work!'”
Cudi has conflicting emotions about being on Yeezus.
“A part of me was flattered, like, that’s cool he thought of me. “I started thinking about it more after that,” he continued. “I was thinking, why not call me and have me come in there and present it to you?” Why am I underutilized? Why would I include four bars of vocals to trick my fans into thinking this is a genuine Kid Cudi cameo on this song when it isn’t?”
Cudi later stated that he would rather not be on the song at all.

Cudi has declared that his connection with West is ended. Because of Cudi’s connection with Pete Davidson, West dropped Cudi from his album, Donda 2. West became enraged with Davidson after the young actor and comedian began dating West’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian. Cudi was furious at West’s conduct.
“He exploited his power against me.” “That irritated me,” Cudi told Esquire. “You’re messing with my mental health now, bro.”
Cudi believed West’s actions had irreparably harmed their relationship.
I’m not a member of your family. No, I’m not Kim. It makes no difference whether or not I am buddies with Pete. I had nothing to do with any of this s***, Cudi continued. “If you can’t deal with the fact that you lost your lady as a grown man? That is not my problem, f******.
