SHOPPERS are up in arms after Aldi introduced a new self-checkout rule meaning anyone can be searched at the till.
The discount supermarket has confirmed that bag checks are being carried out but stressed they are only ever carried out with customers’ permission.

Aldi said the move was in line with other UK supermarkets.
An Aldi worker previously told The Grocer a bag searching policy had been introduced into a “small number of” stores, with checks being done by security guards rather than store staff.
They said: “We are asking that they allow us to look in the bags to see if they are empty.
“We have been asking to look in the bags to make sure none of our items are in there.”

However, the supermarket denied it was “refusing” service to any customer who would not allow their bags to be searched.
While Aldi said the policy had been introduced some time ago, it is still irking my shoppers.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one annoyed customer wrote recently: “Another altercation with Aldi who want to check everyone’s bags are empty before they start scanning your purchases.
“My feedback was that I resent paying to be treated as if I was a suspect in a crime.”

Then in a response to a commentator, the same person replied: “I get that there is more shoplifting and we can agree on some of the reasons.
“Aldi’s response to treat all customers as if they are shoplifters simply doesn’t agree with me.”
While another X user added: “Our Aldi staff are now required to check the empty bags you’ve brought with you before they put through your shopping.
“I always smile sweetly and tell them I’m not giving them permission to look in MY bags.”
And a third person tweeted: “I refuse to shop Aldi where customers are disrespected made to feel criminal… I had an empty folded up bag on my hand, and they asked to check it.”
