A poll for eco-friendly detergent maker Smol found a third of us run the dishwasher when it isn’t full. And almost one in five give it a spin even when it is mostly empty — wasting 7.5 litres of water each time.

But you can turn that wasted space into dinner.
Food consultant Nellie Nichols, who is working with Smol, says: “There is nothing more fun than cooking in a dishwasher.
“The results are comparable to the sous vide, or water bath, technique. Just make sure everything is cooked-through thoroughly so it’s safe to eat.” Here are some ideas you can try.
FISH SUPPER: Some chefs claim they have been doing this one for years.
Wrap a fillet of salmon tightly in foil and place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Run it on a regular cycle and the salmon will come out poached.
Shake things up by adding a slice of lemon or sprinkle of chilli flakes beforehand. This is a great way to cook in bulk for family dinners.
BOIL AN EGG: Pop a few eggs in a jar of water, put it in the dishwasher and before you know it, you will have plenty of boiled eggs — perfect as snacks, for picnics and in buffets.
FLAVOURED SPIRITS: This idea went viral recently, using vodka and Swizzels Squashies sweets. Add your favourite sweets (mine are lemon sherbets) to a bottle of vodka two-thirds full.
Seal and put in the dishwasher on a hot wash, around 70C. This should melt the sweets into the spirit. Allow to cool before serving or put it in the fridge for later.
COOK VEGGIES: Lots of people have been posting on social media about cooking veg in jars. Mason jars seem to work best.
Fill with water, add your veg and pop in the dishwasher on a hot cycle for tasty and healthy “steamed” fresh veg.
