CYCLE your way to some big savings this week.

It’s National Bike To School Week, to encourage kids to start pedalling to improve their health as well as the planet’s.

But if you’re put off by the cost of cycling, here’s how to avoid being saddled with big bills.

BARGAIN BIKES: Getting the actual bike is the big-hitter in cost terms but I recently discovered sports store chain Decathlon’s Second Life bikes.

These used bikes are prevented from going to waste by Decathlon’s team of experts, who fully refurbish them. Not only does this increase their lifespan and save precious raw materials, but prices are also reduced by up to 40 per cent and still carry the same warranty as a new bike.

Visit secondlife.decathlon.co.uk where I saw age 6-9 bikes for as little as £83.99. A steal.

GROW ’N’ GO: Regularly buying a new bike as kids get bigger is not an option for most, but there is a new alternative.

Thebikeclub.co.uk is a subscription service that lets you pay for your children’s bikes as they use them, instead of having to shell out upfront. It costs around £5 to £15 a month, or up to £30 for specialist bikes.

When your child grows out of the bike, you can simply exchange it for a bigger one. If you don’t need it any more, you can return the bike and cancel your subscription for £29.99.

KIT HITS: Lidl has a range of cycling essentials at ridiculously low prices and they’re in-store now. The collection includes a bike helmet for £9.99, a 20-litre cycling rucksack for £9.99 and, for adults, a memory foam saddle cover for £4.99 for a safe and comfortable ride. These are such good value.

GET IN GEAR: For cycling clothing head to George at Asda, which has two-packs of kids’ cycling shorts for £3.

Or go to sportsdirect.com, where I found junior reflective cycling jackets that are usually £44.99 for just £17.99.

At Halfords I saw sale helmets for £14.99, while Argos has handy packs of safety pads for under £15.
