Glasgow is the best location to get on the property ladder, an analysis of 50 cities across the UK concludes.

Places in Scotland and the North West of England dominate the First Time Buyer Appeal Index compiled by savings provider Aldermore.

The company considered ten factors including the average first-time buyer selling price, the average deposit needed as a proportion of income, typical commuting time and salaries — and the number of restaurants and pubs per 10,000 people.

Glasgow claimed the top spot with an average price tag of £158,310 for a first-time property in the city — well below the national average.

It also boasts competitive pay, reasonable commuting times and a high proportion of bars and restaurants.

Edinburgh fell from fifth to tenth place in a year as the average amount needed for a deposit has risen to £67,224 — compared with £32,385 in Glasgow.

Dundee and Aberdeen were in second and third place, followed by Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Swansea and Derby.

Meanwhile, three in five first-time buyers are willing to move to a different part of the country to buy a property, a survey by Halifax found last week.

Average first-time buyer property prices have surged from £148,474 to £288,030 in a decade, it said. The average deposit put down by first-time buyers is now £54,156.

Not a single city in the South made it into Aldermore’s top ten for the second consecutive year. Basildon, Chelmsford and Maidstone continue to be ranked among the least attractive for first-time buyers because of cost. London was ranked at 43.
