DIG out the tartan and raise a toast to Scotland’s national poet.

Tonight is Burns Night, a celebration of the life and work of Robert Burns, and a great excuse to get stuck into haggis, tatties and neeps.

Here’s how to lay on the traditional Scots spread on a budget . . .

Here’s how to lay on the traditional Scots spread on a budget . . .

OFFALLY GOOD: The centrepiece of any Burns supper is haggis, served with a combo of mashed potato and swede.

You can get Simon Howie original haggis for £2.25 at Tesco, down from £2.75.

Or Sainsbury’s has Macsween haggis, £2.25 with a Nectar card, reduced from £3. Alternatively, try Aldi’s haggis bons bons — haggis rolled in breadcrumbs — which are also £2.25.

You’ll then need some spuds. Tesco all-rounder potatoes are £1.19p a bag and ideal for mashing. Then boil and mash swede to create your neeps.

Aldi has prepared packs for £1.19 in Scotland, but you’ll save money buying the veg and doing your own. It’s 49p at Aldi and 69p at Tesco.

SWEET TOUCH: Cranachan is a fabulous traditional Scottish dessert.

Start by whisking up a pack of double cream before mixing in a couple of tablespoons each of honey, whisky and oats.

Create a raspberry puree by crushing the fruit through a sieve and add a little sugar. Then alternate layers of the cream mix with the puree.

SIP ON SCOTCH: Wash down your meal with a nip of whisky. You can save a third on selected Scotch at Tesco.

Glen Keith single malt is £21, down from £31.50, while Famous Grouse is £15, down from £17.75. Or try Tennent’s lager — a ten-pack is £9.20 at Aldi.

If you’re avoiding booze, opt for Scotland’s other national drink, Irn-Bru. Two 24-packs are £17 at Iceland, where a 2-litre bottle is £1.50.
