But it’s something most of us have never done — despite half of drivers saying they would consider carpooling, according to research by Esso.

If you want to give it a go, follow these tips . . .

BUDDY UP: Drivers using carpooling platform Liftshare save an average of £1,034 a year, according to the site.

The service is free to use. Just put the journey you want to take on the site and Liftshare will match you to other members and you can request to share.

The service gives a suggested contribution from passengers to drivers, which can be exchanged directly between you.

A partnership between Liftshare and Esso means you can become a member of the site and get 500 bonus Nectar points with your next purchase at Esso.

Other platforms, such as BlaBlaCar and Getaround, work in a similar way.

WORK IT OUT: Commuting to work is a regular journey that many of us make day in day out.

If you can find someone doing the same regular journey, it makes sense to share the load with co-workers.

Some companies facilitate lift-sharing but if yours doesn’t, you could suggest the idea to your HR department.

You could try to organise it yourself by asking fellow workers if there’s any interest and go from there.

Platforms such as Liftshare can be set up so you only match with people from the same company or address.

STAY SAFE: It can be daunting to share a lift with someone you haven’t met before.

Liftshare says not to share your full name or address before you have met someone.

When meeting someone, pick a public place and let friends and family know your plans.

If you don’t feel comfortable, there is no obligation to go through with the lift.
