In the world of motoring some people live by the creed of bigger means better – and some of these humungous vehicles well and truly live up to that.

Car manufacturers like to boast about the size of their cars, but they must struggle to put into words the sheer scale of some of their creations.

And while cars may be getting bigger in the modern world, it’s fair to say in the past car firms have never been shy about pushing the envelope when it comes to their length of their vehicles.

Some behemoths can stretch to a remarkable 22ft in length – that’s more than a third bigger than your average 15ft-long parking space in the UK.

Towards to top end of the scale it becomes debateable whether these beasts can even be called cars anymore, with weekly motoring magazine Autocar sensibly limiting it to any vehicle that can be bought for non-commercial use by the public.

Unsurprisingly, many of these extra-large motors come from the US – a country where super-sizing everything from meals to cars is seen as highly desirable – but some are European and the winner of the longest title manages to sneak into Autocar’s criteria but may be a matter of serious debate.

These are the 20 longest cars made by the world’s biggest manufacturers:
