By 12.18pm, the number of reported outages with the app and website had reached 551, according to Downdetector.

Tesco confirmed the technical issue after several customers complained online.

“We have reported this to our IT Team and they are currently investigating this. We hope this will be resolved very soon and thank you for your patience.”

One shopper posted: “Tesco is your website down? Can’t add to trolly or book a slot.”

Another said: “App seems to be down, can’t confirm my basket for home delivery?”

And another tweeted: “I need to checkout my Grocery shopping before the approaching cut off deadline but your app and website doesn’t appear to be working. I hope any missed deadline will be accommodated here?”

Tesco has since confirmed that the technical issue has been resolved and customers should be able to place orders on the app and website as normal.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have now fixed a technical issue that impacted some of our customers using our website and app earlier today. We are sorry for any inconvenience this caused.”

Tesco’s website last went down on August 15, leaving thousands of customers unable to complete their online orders.

Over 2,000 complaints had been logged on outage detection site Downdetector.

On August 19, the firm also cancelled all home deliveries after 1pm for thousands of shoppers after huge ‘technical glitch’

The supermarket giant was made quickly aware of problems and apologised to shoppers for the inconvenience.

Customers were met with blocked pages and error messages trying to log on to Tesco’s online pages.

Can you claim compensation for outages?

There’s no fixed compensation scheme for supermarket website outages like there is for other industries such as telecoms.

But if being unable to access your account has left you out of pocket for any reason, it’s worth contacting Tesco.

You should gather evidence, for example a delivery receipt, and get in touch with Tesco’s customer service team.

For online grocery order issues you can ring 0800 323 4040 which is free to call from landlines and mobiles.
