Today is the last chance for savers to open Santander’s limited easy-access saver account, which pays a best buy rate of 5.2 per cent on balances up to £250,000 for 12 months.

The easy-access account will be withdrawn tonight, and savers will have until 23.59 tonight to open it.

Any applications received by 23:59 today will receive the 5.2 per cent rate once opened.

Look sharp: Santander is pulling its market-leading easy-access deal which pays 5.2% tonight

The account – which launched just over a week ago – was initially going to be withdrawn on Sunday 17 September, but Santander warned that it could be pulled earlier than this if demand was high.

Experts believed the account being pulled early was ‘a racing certainty’ and now high demand for its best buy rate meaning is it being pulled five days early.

From tomorrow, Santander’s easy access saver account returns to sale offering a rate of 2.5 per cent for 12 months.

On a £10,000 savings pot, that’s a difference of £270 interest – £520 if the limited easy-access is opened today, versus £250 in the inferior account.

The account is open to those with or without existing Santander accounts, and it can be opened online, in app, over the phone or in branch.

The limited easy access saver reverts to Santander’s everyday saver with a rate of just 1.05 per cent after a year.

Time will tell if other providers will up the rates on their easy-access accounts once Santander’s bumper rate disappears.

Other easy-access deals near the top of the best buy tables are with Furness Building Society, which pays 5 per cent on deposits of up to £250,000 in its easy-access account.

Monument Bank offers 4.94 per cent, closely followed by Shawbrook Bank which pays 4.93 per cent.
