Hundreds of thousands of people could be blocked from making online credit card purchases because they do not have a smartphone, Money Mail can reveal.
New industry-wide security checks introduced on Monday mean one in four online payments will require you to enter a code to complete it.
It is typically sent by text but most providers offer options to receive it by email or as an automated message on a landline.

But credit card provider Jaja, which took on some 500,000 Post Office, Bank of Ireland and AA accounts in 2020, must verify online payments using its smartphone app.
Reader Russ Shepherd told Money Mail he was emailed by Jaja last month. He says: ‘I explained that I did not use mobile banking just online banking.
‘I was told it was a Government requirement.’
Jaja says those without mobile banking can call customer service for other options — not including texts or emails.
