He revealed that homeowners may be too quick to turn the heating up and there is a very simple thing they can do to warm up without wasting energy.

Although he said he knows the two-step trick “sounds silly” Martin believes “it really does make a difference”.

“Put your feet up, the floors are really cold in the household, so if you’re gonna be in the house don’t have your feet on the floor have them up,” he said.

According to the show host, this means to slash your heating bills you just need to follow step one – which is to sit down and step two – which is to put your feet up.

This bizarre advice comes as part of a series of tips the expert has shared to “heat the human not the home” – which he created for those struggling with energy bills this winter.

Other tips include always talking to energy firms politely, reaching out to charities, having a hot water bottle in a sleeping bag, and correctly layering clothing.

Martin added that his tips to “heat the human and not the home” are “not a recommendation” and and are only for those who are “really struggling”.

Another trick the Money Saving Expert team have shared to cut energy usage is to use a microwaveable wheat bag.

These bags, according to the website, can be picked up for just £4 and costs less than just 1p per hour, and 17 per week.

They can be bought from local drugstores such as Superdrug for just £3.99, or from e-stores such as Amazon and eBay.

The team also busted the myth that it’s cheaper to leave the heating on low all day.

The MSE Team said: “Having the heating on only when you need it is, in the long run, the best way to save energy, and therefore money, according to Energy Saving Trust.
