ARE you accidentally draining your savings?
A survey by Samsung suggests Brits are spending nearly double what they need to on washing detergent.
As it’s Zero Waste Week, I’m trying to save the environment — and a bit of cash at the same time.
Here are some tips . . .
TRY SOMETHING NEW: New Reco laundry sheets are strips of dehydrated washing detergent.
You simply pop them in the wash and they will disappear, as they are fully biodegradable.
The packaging they arrive in is completely recyclable, with no plastic.
Get a ten-wash trial pack for just £3 from reco.shop now.
MAKE IT WHITE: Forget expensive bleaching and whitening products.
Use half a cup of lemon juice in your white wash to help bleach clothes or sheets.
Drying in direct sunlight can also help them stay white.
SOFTEN IT UP: When washing towels, don’t use extra detergent or fabric softener which costs around £3 a time.
Instead, add a cup of vinegar to the load. Vinegar helps remove excess detergent to keep towels fluffy and soft.
DIAL DOWN THE SPENDING: Turn the temperature down on your wash and you save on water, which is good for the environment and your finances.
Most garments can be washed in cool water.
INVEST TO SPEND LESS: The longer you spend drying items, the more money you will end up spending.
Avoid bigger bills by investing in dryer balls to pop in the tumble dryer.
They can reduce drying time by at least 30 per cent and you can get a two-pack of JML Dryer Balls for just a fiver at Wilko.
WASH ’N’ ECO: If you are upgrading your washing machine, consider a more eco-friendly one.
The Indesit EcoTime IWC71252W 7KG Washing Machine matches the exact amount of water needed for each cycle and it’s currently on offer for £179.99, down from £199.99, at Argos.
