The owner of Simply Be and JD Williams warned of a ‘very challenging’ few months ahead after it crashed into the red.
Shares in N Brown Group, which also owns men’s clothing brand Jacamo, slumped after it reported annual losses of £71.1million for the year to March 4.
That followed profits of £19.2million over the previous 12 months. With sales of its clothes falling nearly 7 per cent to £433.4million, N Brown said inflation had taken its toll on the business and weighed on consumer spending.
The dip in sales came despite the retailer increasing its prices and reducing the number of items on sale.
The cost of the average item rose 12 per cent.

N Brown warned that conditions are likely to get worse before they get better.
It said it has already started the new financial year with fewer active customers, and that demand for its summer ranges has been hit by poor early spring weather.
Staff have also been affected, with N Brown revealing it had made redundancies across its workforce of around 1,800 staff in the UK after seeing revenues fall.
The retailer said it is keeping a tight control on costs while weaker consumer demand continues to weigh on its performance.
Shares dropped 9.8 per cent.
