IT’S time to clear out and tidy up.

With shops reopening on Monday, many of us will be thinking about making space for some shiny new possessions. But first, get rid of the old.

Sue Spencer, who is a professional organiser and home-tidying consultant trained by expert Marie Kondo, says: “Many people do the hard work of deciding what to let go, then don’t know how to get rid. Instead they shove it in a cupboard.

“But I know how to help and I can even make you some money.”

Try her tips to help you get sorted . . .

CLOTHES: Selling your in-dividual items is time-consuming and costly, according to Sue.

She advises: “Teen stuff can be sold on the Depop app. For vintage or branded-only, use auction sites, or sell bundles of kids’ clothing in the same size to turn a profit.”

No car to take lots of items? No problem.

Sue adds: “You can head to giftshop.redcross.org.uk and add the free donation bag to your shopping basket. They will send you a bag that you can fill to 10kg. Simply print and attach the postage label and drop it off at your local Collect+ store.”

BOOKS: Sue says: “When I am de-cluttering with clients, we will always have books left. The key to making some money from these is to gather them in volume. I use the scanner from musicmagpie.co.uk to scan barcodes.

Each individual book might not seem worth it, but I recently got £68 for a client. If it’s over 5kg, the service will come and pick them up for you.”

BEDDING: “Many of my clients always have over- flowing cupboards of bed linen that they have been accumulating for years,” says Sue.

“If you have decent sets, get them on Facebook Marketplace or another auction site. If you are looking to get rid of them, check your local council and find out what the homeless shelters and refuges in your area are after. It’s a lovely way to help someone in need.”

TOOLS & PAINT: Sue says: “Old tools? A lot of charities will send them to less fortunate countries to help them with building and training appren-ticeships.

“Old paint, if left for a long time, will just go off. Keep a tester-size amount for touch-ups and then contact communityrepaint.org.uk to donate the rest. They will be used for community projects.”

TECH: “With phones,” Sue advises: “Compare the price at every recycling scheme online as they tend to differ. But even if you have a broken tablet or laptop, they will often offer you a good price.

“One tip for broken laptops is to list them with a full description of the damage on auction sites. Repairers will pay good money to break them down for parts.”
