KFC is making a major change to its rewards scheme – and loyalty points are gone forever.

Instead anyone buying fried chicken at the chain will get the opportunity to win prizes.

It means food fans will face a game of chance rather than a guaranteed reward when dining.

KFC ditched its old loyalty scheme where you collect stamps back in July, leaving fans furious.

For each three stamps you could get any side dish for free, like hot wings or small popcorn chicken.

Seven stamps got you a free snack, while 11 got you a £5 off your order.

You could earn one stamp by spending over £3, or two when spending over £15.

Now KFC has finally unveiled its new reward scheme that will replace stamps – and it will be all down to luck.

Each time you make a purchase you can play to win a prize through the Rewards Arcade in the KFC app.

The fast food chain said it’s giving away “1,000s of free menu items every day”.

The items up for grabs include:

  • 2 single wings
  • Regular fries
  • BBQ dipped bites
  • Mini fillet
  • Flamin’ wrap
  • Fillet Burger
  • Zinger burger
  • Regular popcorn
  • 6 piece original recipe bargain bucket
  • 2 pieces of original recipe chicken
  • 3 piece boneless chicken with dip
  • Mighty bucket for one

We’ve asked KFC what the chances of winning are and will update when we hear back.

The value of the win ranges from £1.19 for two wings, up to £7.49 for the mighty bucket for one, though prices can vary depending on location.

The shake up means that you could win an item worth several pounds – or end up with nothing at all.

But KFC told The Sun that collecting stamps under the old scheme took a long time and the Reward Arcade offers instant wins and no need to wait.

McDonald’s, Nando’s and Subway are among the fast food chains offering points for spending that you can save up for rewards.

And similar schemes are available at shops like Boots, which offers Advantage Card points, and Tesco with Clubcard points.

Deals expert Joseph Seager told The Sun the change was not one for the better.

He said: “Previously you got something for loyalty and worked towards an actual goal. You knew you were going to get something.

“It’s great that there are offers and discounted prices within the app but with the rewards arcade, there is no guarantee of actually getting anything.”

How does the new KFC rewards scheme work?

To get a chance to win, you need to have the KFC app.

It’s free to download but you need to share some personal information like name and email.

You can get rewards when you order via the app, or by scanning a QR code in the app when you buy food in the restaurant.

You’ll need to spend at least £3 in store to be in with a chance of winning, or when ordering via the app when picking up in store or getting takeaway.

That goes up to £7 if you order via with KFC for home delivery. You won’t get any rewards if you order for delivery via Just Eat or Deliveroo.

Once you’ve bought your food, you’ll get an invite to play in the app.

If you win, you’ll need to claim your freebie within 40 days. Plus, you can only redeem one at a time.

But there’s no limit on the number of freebies you can have in your account at any one time.

There’s no reward for signing up to the app, whereas previously you could earn three stamps with the old scheme.

There will still be other regular offers available in the app on top of the rewards, like the KFC Big Deal, which contains ten mini fillets for £5.99.

Meanwhile in some real-life locations across the country you’ll be able to hunt down KFC’s colonel coins and a chance for more prizes.

From September 9 to 11 you can be in with a chance of winning free food, a £50 voucher or a year’s supply of KFC.

The extra prizes, to celebrate the launch of the new rewards scheme, will be up for grabs at the following restaurant locations:

  • Brighton
  • Bournemouth
  • Weston-Super-Mare
  • Llandudno
  • Portsmouth
  • Southend-on-Sea
  • Scarborough
  • Paignton
  • Margate
  • Blackpool
  • Great Yarmouth
