SHOPPERS have been left devastated after Nestlé announced it is axing two chocolate bars from shelves.

The chocolatier is discontinuing both Breakaway and Yorkie biscuit bars following a decline in sales in a blow for sweet-toothed fans.

The Breakaway bar, first introduced in 1970, will no longer be produced from March.

Nestlé said fans will still be able to buy the bar from retailers throughout February and March while stocks last.

Meanwhile, Yorkie biscuit bars, not to be confused with Yorkie chocolate bars, have already been axed.

Fans have been left devastated at the news the two chocolates will disappear for good, and just months after the chocolatier axed Caramac bars from shelves.

One said: “First it was the Caramac, now Breakaway bars!

“Nestle are gradually removing my chocolate childhood from supermarket shelves.”

Another said: “It’s the end of the world. What will we do now?”

A third added: “First Caramac and now they’re getting rid of Yorkie and Breakaway bars. When will this cull of chocolate bar classics end?”

The Breakaway bar, a biscuit made up of wholemeal, oat and coconut flour, wrapped in milk chocolate, was first launched in 1970 by Rowntree Mackintosh.

Nestlé took over the production of the bar in 1988, with it becoming a firm favourite among shoppers.

But the chocolatier said falling sales had meant it had been forced to axe the chocolate treat.

It added it would be introducing new products to the market though, including a new Blue Riband Hazelnut which will be available in supermarkets from this month.

Shoppers can also get their hands on a newly-launched Kitkat Chunky White Lotus and Aero Hazelnut from this month.

A spokeswoman said: “We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but it’s time for us to say goodbye to Breakaway.

“We have seen a decline in the sales of Breakaway over the past few years and, unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to discontinue it.

“By saying goodbye to Breakaway, we can focus on our best-performing brands, as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight consumers’ tastebuds.”

It comes after Nestlé announced it was axing the Caramac bar in November, with fans calling it a “travesty”.

The chocolatier said it had made the “difficult decision” following low sales.

A month later, The Sun revealed it had axed Drifter bars after first launching them in the 1980s.

Fans came out in force begging Nestlé to bring back the bar back.

One said: “Nestle, do us all a favour and bring back the Drifter so people can have a nice cup of tea with a Drifter…..these need to be brought back.

“There is no biscuit/chocolate bar that compares to the caramel wafer delight!”

Meanwhile, Cadbury quietly scrapped the popular Dairy Milk 30% less sugar bar in 2023, leaving fans in shock.
