AS spring finally starts to warm up, it’s time to think about refreshing your wardrobe.

But instead of buying new, you can make your current clothes last longer.

Simply follow these thrifty tricks . . .

GO LOW: Clean clothes in cold or cool water — or even better, hand wash to keep the colour bright. Hot-water washes can contribute to fading and damage the fabric.

Where you can, lower the temperature to keep favourite items looking bright. It’s better for your energy bill, too.

HANG AROUND: Air-drying your clothes on a rack or clothing line is not only one of the fastest ways to dry clothes — it also helps prevent shrinking and colour fading, which can occur during the machine drying cycle.

For bright colours, avoid drying in direct sunlight. Keep the rack in a cool, airy section outdoors or on a balcony.

STORE SMART: A cool, dark place is the best place to keep the items you wear in good condition.

Firstly, make sure clothing is fully dry before you put it away and avoid anywhere humid.

The latter can cause mildew to build up in clothes, which erodes fabric and causes stains.

FLIP REVERSE: If you have bought a bright garment recently, laundry experts at Ariel suggest turning it inside out to wash.

This helps stop the dye transferring to other items in the washing machine and slows the fading process.

WAX ON: April may be over but there are still some showers on the horizon.

Give jackets and shoes a longer life by re-waxing them at home with natural beeswax, making them waterproof.

It works well on leather shoes and macs but check the clothing care label first. Cleanipedia.com has a re-waxing guide which shows the step-by-step process.

REPAIR THE WEAR: Small tears and holes in clothing can become large, unrepairable ones if you do not act quickly.

If you see a small scuff or hole forming, fix it fast to make sure your favourite item is not ruined.
