MULLED wine is the perfect way to warm up on cold winter days, but where can you get the best for a good price?

The Sun has tested some festive classics to find out which supermarket own-brand goods are the best quality.

Asda’s mulled wine worked out the cheapest

This time, we’ve tried mulled wine from Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Lidl.

For each one, we gave it a score out of 10 for taste and a score out of 10 for value, based on the price per 100ml.

This score also took into account the alcohol content.

Here’s how the wines scored out of 20 overall:

I tried Xmas crisps including turkey & stuffing flavour - one tasted burnt
I tried pigs in blankets from supermarkets - there was a clear winner

Tesco’s mulled wine was watery and very sweet, with a synthetic taste of Christmas spice.

It had a low alcohol content of 5.5 per cent ABV, but was middle-of-the-range on price, at 40p per 100ml.

  • Taste: 5/10
  • Value: 6/10
  • Total: 11/20

The mulled wine from Asda was the joint-cheapest we tested, at just 37p per 100ml.

But it was thin and artificially sweet, with a bitter aftertaste.

Our testers thought the taste was similar to cough medicine.

  • Taste: 4/10
  • Value: 7/10
  • Total: 11/20

WINNER Morrisons Winter Warmer Mulled Wine

  • £3.89 for 75cl

This Morrisons mulled wine had a warming festive feel with lots of cinnamon and spice flavour.

It was rich and really Christmassy.

Although the most expensive wine we tried, at 52p per 100ml, it also had one of the highest alcohol contents, of 8 per cent ABV, making it decent value for money.

  • Taste: 8/10
  • Value: 8/10
  • Total: 16/20

Sainsbury’s Mull It Over Mulled Wine

  • £3.25 for 75cl

The Sainsbury’s mulled wine was full of Christmas spice flavours like star anise, cinnamon and cloves.

It wasn’t too sweet and tasted rich – but had a low alcohol content of 5.5 per cent ABV.

It cost 43p per 100ml, which was mid-range on price.

  • Taste: 7/10
  • Value: 7/10
  • Total: 14/20

Aldi Mulled Wine

  • £2.79 for 75cl

Aldi’s mulled wine was disappointingly tasteless, with no punchy spice flavour.

It felt thin and very sweet and contained just 5.5 per cent ABV.

But it was the joint-cheapest wine we tried, at just 37p per litre.

  • Taste: 5/10
  • Value: 7/10
  • Total: 12/20

Lidl Christkindl Gluhwein

  • £4.99 for 1litre

This was the second most expensive mulled wine we tried, at 50 per 100ml, but it had a vinegary smell and had the sharp taste of very cheap red wine.

Despite having the highest alcohol content, at 8.7 per cent ABV, the label revealed it wasn’t actually classed as a wine.

Instead it was a “flavoured beverage containing wine”.

The bottle was very decorative but the festive joy ended there.

  • Value: 6/10
  • Total: 9/20
