A WOMAN who scooped a £6.5million lottery jackpot says everyone thinks her first purchase was boring – but she didn’t know what else to buy.

Viv Moss, from Newquay, won the National Lottery prize 23 years ago.

She told CornwallLive: “The trouble is, old habits die hard. The first thing we did was go out and buy a very expensive kettle.”

“We were given £500 to tide us over while the rest came through.

“But at the end of four weeks, we still had the £500 because we didn’t know what to do with even that.”

Viv stayed in her job for a year after scooping the massive jackpot – because she did not want to put pressure on her colleagues.

But eventually Viv and her partner Ken used their winnings to retire early and move to Cornwall.

In 2021 she was part of a group of lottery winners who helped clean up a local beach.

Viv was joined by teaching assistant Taryn Hawkes, who won £1million from a Lucky Dip in March 2018.

When Taryn realised she had won the prize, she “screamed so loudly the whole street heard me”.

She continued to work as a teaching assistant – and spent the sum on medical treatment to stop her husband Grant spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Just before the pandemic kicked off Grant and Taryn treated themselves to a holiday in Majorca – their first ever trip abroad.

It comes after a EuroMillions lottery winner who scooped a whopping £108million jackpot revealed the first things he bought.
