But fans were able to express a sigh of relief when Aldi released a Willy Wonka-inspired Christmas advert and Kevin was finally back on TV screens.

Accompanied by grate grandpa, Kevin embarks on his tour of the festive goodie-filled plant, encountering all sorts of mischievous characters on the way – including dancing plumty-dumptys and a spoilt little sprout.

The ad concludes with the charming closing message “Seasonal goodwill was truly in the air as Christmas is a time that’s sweeter when you share”.

Shoppers flocked to Facebook to share their excitement at the toys being released.

Many shoppers said they hoped to be the first to nab the toys in their local area.

One user said: “I’m so excited I can hardly wait, happy to be the first one in the queue I’m in Scotland now and it’s just down the road Aldi I can’t wait to get my hands on the new Kevin the carrot plush toys so excited.”

Another said: “I was bit late getting to mine last year but was first in the queue! Was surprised.”

“Wonder how many will scramble for the golden Kevin I’m assuming there won’t be many in each store being limited edition,” said another.

The limited toy range has proven to be extremely popular with shoppers over the past few years.

Last year thousands of Aldi shoppers rushed to buy Kevin the Carrot toys were forced to queue on the website and from 4am outside shops.

In previous years, actual fights have broken out in the aisles as parents fought to get their hands on them.

Some even bulk-bought the characters and took to eBay to flog them for much higher than they nabbed them for.

This year Aldi has said it will limit the sale of the toys to two per customer so as many people as possible have the chance to take a Kevin home for Christmas.

Aldi has already revealed a new chocolate Kevin-themed range is available in stores.
