But coffee-lovers need to act quickly – the deal is for one day only and you can only claim one freebie per person. The offer is only available to customers who bring their own reuseable cup.

It’s also a double celebration as Starbucks marks its 50th anniversary.

And if you haven’t got a reuseable cup on you, you could buy one in store.
The company, which is committed to help customers reduce waste, has announced plans to introduce an initiative to encourage the use of reusable cups.

Coffee fans took to social media to boast of their free cups of java.

One user tweeted a picture enjoying a coffee from her balcony. She said: “Enjoying our free Pike Place coffee this morning. Happy 50th @Starbucks! #NationalCoffeeDay”

On Instagram, one user said: “I hit our local drive through on the way to work. Problem is, it’s now gone and I want another.”

Other users lamented that the deal did not offer a decaf version or something more exciting like a latte, however. The coffee chain launched its famous Pumpkin Spice Latte for autumn a few weeks ago.

Of course, today is not the only day you can enjoy coffee freebies. We have previously looked at the best and worst coffee shop reward schemes.

Our investigation found you’d need to spend £50 to get a “free” drink at Starbucks.

McDonald’s had the best value reward scheme, with a free drink after buying just five coffees, working out to a total spend of just £7.45.
