THE Taj Mahal is easily one of the most recognised landmarks in the world.

What is the Taj Mahal?
The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum.
Construction started in 1932 and it was completed by 1648.
But other parts including the mosque, the guest house and the main gateway on the south were also added and finished in 1653.
It was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal.
When Shah Jahan died in 1966 he was buried in the Taj Mahal next to his wife.
The mausoleum was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage”.

The Taj Mahal is situated the Indian city of Agra.
It sits on the south bank of the Yamuna river.
