PARCEL giant Hermes has been accused of refusing to reimburse thousands of customers when packages go missing.

Campaigners claim the firm puts up a series of “obstacles” to avoid claims.

They include telling customers they need insurance in case Hermes loses an item — as well as allegedly blaming another firm based in Spain.

They are also accused of falsely claiming items are “prohibited”.

Hermes is said to have refused to compensate one customer for a lost rowing machine because they had not taken out insurance — but later backed down after legal proceedings were issued.

In another case, the company is said to have denied liability for a lost bottle of perfume worth £320 because it contained alcohol.

Marc Gander, of the Consumer Action Group, says he has helped hundreds successfully sue the firm.

He said: “Hermes is leaving thousands of customers out of pocket when they lose parcels. It is an absolute scandal. The tricks they pull are unbelievable.”

Hermes said all items were covered for £20 compensation and, like other carriers, it offered additional cover for dearer items.

A spokesman added: “A list of restricted and prohibited items is clearly positioned at the point of order.”
