There are plenty of ways you can DIY when it comes to sprucing up your home ready for December — and doing so will save you dosh . . .

Leaf it out: In need of a wreath? Bauble wreaths make a great alternative but usually come with a big price tag — unless you make them yourself. John Lewis is selling a brightly coloured rainbow wreath for £25, but if you make your own using coloured baubles from B&M (£3 for 49), and pipe cleaners (£3 at HobbyCraft), you can cut the cost considerably — and still have baubles to spare for your tree.

Not a lot of dough: Making salt dough decorations will keep your kids happy and you can raid your cupboards for the ingredients. Simply mix a cup of flour with a cup of salt and half a cup of water to make your dough. You can then add food colouring to achieve the desired look. Kids can cut out the shapes using cookie cutters and, after the designs have dried out, decorate with glitter, sequins and paint.

Tree-sy peasy: Making your own bespoke decs can be a great family activity with the kids. Hobbycraft is selling plain ceramic baubles, three for £3. You can then add your names, colours and designs easily by using brush pens, £4 for a pack of eight different colours, from The Works. Doing DIY personalisation works out far cheaper than buying similar personalised options from notonthehighstreet.com, where a single ceramic bauble will set you back £10.

SAVING: £23, when you make three

Looking pine: Pine cones are fantastically festive once jazzed up. If you can’t find them while out and about at the park, pick up a pack of them from £1.75 for 25 on eBay. Decorate with glitter or gold paint to add a festive touch, then simply hang from a ribbon and you’re good to go. Similar shop-bought decorations cost £3.75 for just three at christmastimeuk.com.
