BANKING customers who prefer using their local branch may not find that so easy this year – as more closures are announced.

Major banks are opting to close local branches as more people make the switch to digital and online banking.

There will be 257 bank branches closing in 2023

But many people, particularly the elderly, still rely on in-person services.

Data from UK cash machine network, LINK, tracks any planned branch closures across the UK.

The website reveals there are 322 planned closures for 2023 and a number have already pulled down their shutters this year.

Lloyds Banking Group and rival NatWest have announced that they will be closing an extra 80 branches this year.

At Lloyds Banking group, affected brands include Halifax, Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland.

While both Natwest and branches of its sister bank Royal Bank of Scotland will shut too.

Barclays will shut 54 branches, with a further 14 closures and another 15 announced.

HSBC is set to close 114 branches and NatWest will now bring down the shutters on 92 branches, following its recent announcement.

Lloyds Bank will shut 49 branches and TSB is to close nine branches this year.

Meanwhile, Halifax will close 32 branches and Santander will close five.

Nationwide will close a single branch, as will Virgin Money.

If there are no banks in your town you should be able to do some basic banking at the local Post Office

Many banks also offer a mobile banking service.

This is where your bank brings a bus to your local area offering the services that are usually available at your permanent branch.

You should call up your bank to see if it runs a banking bus and they will be able to tell you where and when it will be parked.

Other banks use buildings such as village halls or libraries to offer mobile banking services.

Here is a full list of the 242 bank branches that are going to close along with the date they are planning on pulling down the shutters.
