IT’S time to put away your winter outfits and dust off your spring clobber.

But if you’re planning on re-wearing an outfit from the past couple of years, you might find it needs a proper clean. Trim that hefty dry cleaning bill with these tricks.

POWER SHOWER: Make your morning routine work harder by hanging clothes in your bathroom when showering. The steam can lift odours and extend the life of your outfit for at least another wear. Some stylists swear a portable steamer also helps break down light stains, and they’re also useful for travelling.

Get the Philips Series 3000 compact garment steamer for £30 at Argos.co.uk — it’s £44.99 on the Philips website. Spritzing with Fabulosa Spray & Wear (99p, from a Savers shop) could work but test on a non-visible area.

GET HANDY: If you’re going to handwash your outfit, then use a specialist cleaning product such as Woolite (£4.50 for 12 washes, Tesco). Sainsbury’s sells Stergene hand wash laundry liquid for £2.50 (15 washes) which is a real bargain.

When drying clothes, one insider trick is to lay the item flat on a towel and roll into the towel to get rid of excess moisture, because wringing out could damage the fabric.

SPOT IT: If it’s just a stain, you might not need to dry clean. Dabbing with baking soda and water or a bit of water and dish soap could work. For best results, place the fabric on a towel before dabbing, so it can absorb the moisture quickly.

JEAN-IUS: If it’s a more casual affair and you’ve invested in a good pair of jeans, skip the washing machine and instead clear a space in your freezer. Folding jeans and popping them in the freezer will kill any bacteria, so you can keep wearing them without washing.

SCOUR THE WEB: Type your location into Groupon to search for local dry cleaning discounts. For example, at the time of writing you can buy £25 worth of credit at KSM Dry Cleaning, Doncaster for the price of £15 — saving you 40 per cent.
