While the 2008 global financial crash saw the sector’s image tarnished, since then tighter regulation has seen the industry’s reputation improve and many banks played a vital role in their communities during Covid.

Around 360,000 people work in banking in the UK and 1.1 million in the wide financial services sector.
While it’s true that some investment bankers make millions with bumper bonuses on top, there are also dozens of other jobs including frontline roles in high street banks to IT experts powering online banking.

What types of jobs are available in banking?
There are dozens of different banking roles and as the industry is heavily reliant on tech, many entirely new jobs are being created too.
The most famous jobs include traders, who price and execute trades, working with bonds, currencies, stocks and options in investment banks and hedge funds, plus asset managers who manage the bank’s investments and risk managers who assess and manage risks.
Jobs at high street banks – also known as retail banks – include mortgage and protection advisers, branch managers, banking consultants and customer services staff.
Both types of banking offer ‘back office’ positions supporting the movement of money plus more conventional jobs in IT, HR and marketing.

This will vary widely according to your role.

A mortgage adviser might take home around £50,000 while traders can earn anything from £45,000 to £200,000 plus bonuses.
What qualifications will I need to get a job in banking?
Most investment bankers will have an undergraduate degree in finance or accounting, or take part in a degree apprenticeship to gain their training.

High Street banks offer positions from entry-level at ages 16 and 18 and the qualifications will depend on the type of job you are interested in.

How can I get into banking?
Investment banks are trying hard to widen their talent pool and become more diverse.
Most offer internships and online and in-person taster days to prospective employees. Search on each bank’s website for details.
High Street banks recruit on a year-round basis so check their website for local vacancies.
For roles such as customer service, banking experience isn’t essential as you will receive full training.
Some banks, including Barclays and HSBC also offer work experience in their retail areas so apply for internships to see if it’s the right career for you.
