The position will see the successful candidate based in Fort William driving trains on Scot Rail. 

The new train driver will get to take the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct on the West Highland Line which is a famous route undertaken by the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films

Just like Harry and his friends who take the journey to and from school every year from the mysterious platform 9 ¾ in King’s Cross Station.

Movie fans may also recognise Corrour, the highest and most remote station in the UK and featured in the film Trainspotting.

You need to be 20 years or older to apply for the job and though there is no degree required you will need to pass a few tests.

Scot’s rail says the successful candidate should be enthusiastic, positive and a strong communicator, with the ability to stay focused and be a good problem solver. 

Those hoping to get the job will have to go through a gruelling application process which includes, a psychometric assessment, competency-based interview, and a medical examination including drugs/alcohol screening.

The job pays £32,968 as a starting salary of £32,968 per annum which will rise to £45,828 once the driver is newly qualified and then £52,566 – £58,028 (after 9 months).

The role comes with several benefits including a final salary pension scheme, generous holiday allowance, as well as free and reduced rate rail travel for the successful candidate and their families.

Julie Dale, HR director at ScotRail said: “There’s no denying that the West Highland Line is one of the world’s great scenic rail journeys, and the opportunity to become a train driver on this route doesn’t come along often.”

“It’s not your usual nine to five, the successful candidates will experience some of the most breath-taking views of the West Highlands, while helping us deliver the best possible service by getting our customers to their destination safely and on time.”

HiJOBS says it’s a chance to get a “first-class opportunity” offering a “highly competitive salary, in-depth training and quick career progression.”

Those interested should apply on the HiJOBS website no later than 18 November. 

Despite widely reported strikes over pay, the best-paid train drivers in the country can earn up to £70,000 a year.

Where you are in the country also makes a difference to what you can earn for example the average train driver salary in London is £58,795, with experienced professionals in the region having salaries that often exceed £69,000.

Train driver salaries in Scotland start at £38,194 for newly qualified drivers, rising to £48,360 after your probation period has ended.
