LIKE many others, I was shocked to hear this week that Gregg’s was opening a café in Primark.

After all, sausage rolls and clothes shopping aren’t two things you automatically put together.

So as I headed to Birmingham city centre to check out the new Tasty by Greggs café at Primark, I didn’t quite know what to expect.

It’s not only Primark’s biggest store in the world – it’s the only one with a Greggs branch in it.

Greggs will also break its own record when the new branch opens at 8am this morning (February 12) as this will be its largest café ever with 130 seats.

The café is launching ahead of a new 11-piece clothing collection collaboration between the two high street giants, which will be available in 60 Primark stores from February 19.

That means anyone wanting a Greggs hoodie is going to have to wait a bit longer yet – but in the meantime you can grab yourself a doughnut in this one-of-a-kind store.

So what is the Tasty by Greggs café like?

My first impression of Tasty by Greggs was that it was like a pristine version of the high street bakery, with a fun twist.

They’ve added lots of neon signs, cheeky slogans and brightly coloured seats, clearly taking inspiration from the Love Island villa.

And there are doughnuts everywhere – not just behind the counter, but the seats and cushions are in the shape of the bakery favourite too.

But the menu is traditional Greggs, and will be recognisable to any of the chain’s fans – as will the staff clad in the brand’s blue aprons.

You can grab the same sausage rolls, cakes and sandwich selection as you can in its other branches.

And with space for 130 people, you won’t have a bun fight on your hands to get a table.

The prices are also the same too – so you won’t have to pay any extra for the glammed-up setting.

One key difference for late-night snackers is that the café will be open until 9pm, which is when the Primark shop closes.

Doughnuts for dinner, anyone?

There’s also a self-service coffee van, where you can grab a pick-me-up on the go.

Just select which hot drink you want – they’ve got all the usual options from cappuccinos to flat whites – and add any extra shots or syrups of your choice.

The coffee will pour when you tap your contactless card.

You’ve also got the option of skipping the queue and ordering ahead by downloading the Gregg’s app.

So you could order while you’re shopping and then have your meal ready and waiting for you after, when you’re ready to refuel.

With the café on its own floor in the shop, I was pleased to discover there was no overwhelming smell of bakery – after all, I wouldn’t want my new purchases smelling like a sausage roll.

Wannabe social media stars will love the special Instagram area, where you can take a snap on a doughnut-shaped swing in front of flashy neon lights.

Your photo might even be displayed on the digital screens in the café.

While Greggs and Primark might sound like a wacky collaboration idea, in reality, it makes sense.

It’s a cheap and cheerful addition for customers to refuel during a shopping spree – browsing the biggest Primark in the world is thirsty work, after all.
