IT’S New Year in China – and you can get in on the celebrations.
From quirky Year of the Tiger merchandise to understanding some of the ancient culture’s money traditions, here’s our guide to marking the festivities.
CASH GIFTS: Chinese people traditionally give each other red envelopes containing clean, crisp notes at New Year to wish them wealth for the future. As well as being fun, it teaches kids that money is precious. Buy a five-pack of lucky red envelopes from the Card Factory, £1.49.
LUCKY NUMBERS: While number eight is lucky for the Chinese, the number four is unlucky as it sounds like the word for death. Use number eight in your celebrations, like laying out eight sweets or hanging eight balloons.
CHEEKY EATS: Grab 20 per cent off a Chinese takeaway with Just Eat’s Cheeky Tuesdays deal. Discounts are applied automatically when you spend £20 on the app. Grab a further £5 off by signing up to TopCashback. See TopCashback.co.uk/just-eat-promotions. Check out Deliveroo where more than 500 Chinese restaurants have offers on.
BEER IT IS: The Clickndrink site has reduced its price for a crate of 24 bottles of Lucky Buddha lager to £32.99 from £35.99. Free delivery.
ROARSOME THEME: Do up your living room with a fabulous tiger cushion from Manomano, £9.98 down from £18.99. Throw in a Chinese money plant — thought to bring good fortune to a household — for £8 from B&Q.
AS ZOO LIKE IT: Take the kids to see a real tiger at the zoo — but first search discount apps Groupon, Vouchercloud and VoucherCodes. Groupon was this week offering £7 kids’ tickets, down from £12.25, to Dudley Zoo in the West Midlands, home to two Sumatran tigers.
