ASDA is giving away free bags of vegetables to customers after they were left over from Christmas.

One shopper posted a picture of their store in Inverness, Scotland which showed sprouts, carrots, parsnips and broccoli all reduced to 0p.

Some Asda stores are giving away free veg

As in previous years, it is understood that Asda stores throughout the country have been told they can give away food for free – but it is down to the discretion of supermarket managers.

In 2019, Asda explained that when there’s extra stock, their chain usually redirects it to the charity FareShare, which they in turn distributes to thousands of local charities and community groups across the UK.

But in some areas where charities may not be open or able to receive the food, store managers have instead given away unsold fruit and vegetables free to customers and staff.

However, it’s worth calling ahead to your local store before making a special trip. Use Asda’s store locator to find your nearest.

Also note that Asda stores will be open on Boxing Day – with reduced hours.

Most will be operating normal Sunday trading hours, either 10am to 4pm or 11am to 5pm.

The latest vegetable reduction comes as competition between stores came to a climax this week as customers made their last dash Christmas shop.

On Tuesday Iceland beat off rivals like Lidl and Aldi as they slashed Christmas vegetables to just 1p.

Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland, said the objective was to make Christmas affordable for everyone.

“It isn’t just about winning the battle for the cheapest supermarket veg,” he told the Sun.

“We wanted to make sure that everyone is able to have a brilliant Christmas with their loved ones without having to worry about the monetary hangover that often follows.”
