Taking a 10 minute shower each day would cost £73 every year, according to Energyhelpline data.

At the new price cap rate, which is due to come in on April 1, a 10 minute shower would cost around 20p – assuming the water is heated to 38C.

If you halved that to five minutes, it would cost you just 10p – a saving of 70p a week for someone who takes a shower every day.

Over the course of the year the saving works out as a £36.40.

Meanwhile, a 15 minute wash would cost you 30p – so cutting that down to five minutes would save you 20p every day.

That’s a saving of £72.80 every year.

The actual cost will depend on a number of factors including shower type, shower head, flow rate and temperature.

It could be different if you don’t shower at home every day or if you sometimes run a bath instead.

If you already take super-speedy showers, or you’d prefer to cut your bills in other ways, there are plenty of tricks to try.

Other everyday tasks could be costing you more thank you think.

For example, leaving the water running while you brush your teeth could add £60 a year to your bills.

Moving your furniture, turning your thermostat down just one degree and bleeding your radiators could all save you money.

We’ve rounded up 40 ways to reduce your gas and electricity spending.
