THE next-generation Xbox could hit the shelves in less than five years, according to freshly unsealed chat logs between executives.

Xbox-maker Microsoft has reportedly floated plans to bring out the new console in 2028, as per discussions between gaming head Phil Spencer and CEO Satya Nadella.

A number of documents and chat logs have been revealed as part of a recent court case with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The FTC sought to block Microsoft’s $69billion purchase of Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard, as the tech giant pushes into game publishing.

According to a leaked document, a 2028 launch plan was referenced in a meeting among more than a dozen senior Microsoft executives in May 2022.

This meeting included CEO Satya Nadella, CFO Amy Hood, and head of gaming Phil Spencer.

In separate chat logs, Anuj Gosali, vice president of immersive experiences, asked whether Microsoft will continue to provide console developers with fixture hardware standards.

“One of the things consoles have been really great at is giving a very clear platform target for developers, and [Game Development Kit] has been really good at this,” he wrote.

“Is the plan for 2028 to keep that [illegible] like model or force a Windows like flexible/capabilities like model?”

Kevin Gammill, a VP of gaming ecosystems, replied: “We have already started this journey with Xbox One and Xbox One X, furthering it in Series S | X.

“We need to be even more flexible going forward with gen 10, but also provide the ability for creators to take advantage of unique hardware capabilities.”
