Mobile store Buymobiles has revealed how much data popular apps are using.

When it comes to social media, TikTok ranked the worst.

Researchers found that it used a whopping 840MB of data per hour.

It also occupied more phone storage than Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, coming in at 244.9MB.

But Instagram’s average daily usage was the highest at 1.74GB over 145 minutes.

Facebook actually used less data per hour than instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, draining 100MB of data per hour.

That’s an eighth of TikTok’s data demand.

When it comes to entertainment, Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube were all roughly equal – using 3GB of data per hour of HD footage.

YouTube’s daily usage was much lower than rivals at 550MB.

But BBC iPlayer was far more efficient, using just 225MB of data per hour.

Spotify came in lower than all of its rivals, simply due to the fact that streaming music is less demanding than video.

For Work apps, Google Hangouts was more data-intense than Skype, Zoom and Gmail.

But Gmail took up the most storage space at 333.3MB.

And on Navigation, Google Maps (36MB) used more data than Waze (15MB), and far more than Apple Maps (10MB).

Google Maps also used more storage on the device than both Waze and Apple Maps.

“It’s been very interesting to see how the most popular apps match up against each other in terms of data usage,” said Buymobiles’ phone expert Jess Canning.

“These apps are a part of our everyday lives and in learning about how much data they use, we’re hoping our customers can choose a tariff plan that’s perfect for them.

“Avid TikTok users will need a hefty amount of data to use the app at their leisure, likewise with the majority of video streaming platforms like YouTube.”
