Wise’s finance boss has quit so he can take time to recover from a serious cycling accident.

Matthew Briers will step down from the foreign exchange financial technology company by March 2024.

It comes a few weeks after chief executive Kristo Kaarmann announced he would be taking a sabbatical between September and December to spend more time with his newborn son.

Briers, who has been in the job for eight years, temporarily stepped aside in the wake of the accident last February.

He said: ‘A year ago I returned to work after a quite horrible accident where I went under the wheels of a bus, and so, with this in mind, my focus will shift to making a full recovery.’

Wise said the search for a replacement would begin immediately with Briers staying for a year to ensure a smooth transition.

Analysts at broker Liberum warned that the highly regarded Briers’s ‘planned departure coinciding with the chief executive’s planned sabbatical risks undermining momentum in the business’.
