Google use the grey logo to pay tribute to influential and famous people that passed away.

The rest of the world joined the UK on Friday, September 9, 2022, in mourning The Queen.

Her Majesty peacefully passed away on the afternoon of Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Balmoral Castle.

Many took to the internet to pay tribute to the longest reigning monarch to serve the UK.

Politicians such as Liz Truss, Theresa May, David Cameron and Boris Johnson all paid tribute and expressed their pride in serving Her as Prime Minister.

World leaders expressed their admiration too such as US President Joe Biden, and French President Emmanuel Macron while Russian president Vladimir Putin wrote a letter to Prince Charles and the Royal Family, expressing his condolences.

Meanwhile, the public gathered in thousands outside Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Balmoral to mourn the beloved Monarch.

Major cities, from New York to Paris, paid tribute by showing British flags and turning on purple lights on iconic sites.

West Ham fans came together to sing God Save The Queen before the kick-off of their Europa League match against FCSB.

Meanwhile, in Old Trafford, Man United and Real Sociedad had a minute of silence before their Europa League clash.

This is not the first time that Google used a grey logo to honour the deceased.

This logo is mostly used to pay tribute to those who served their country.

Memorial Day

On the last Monday of May every year, the United States observe Memorial Day to pay respect to those who lost their lives while serving in the US military.

Google has been doing this for a few years now.

In 2022, they added a special touch with an animation of breezing poppies that are followed by a message which says, “For all who sacrificed, thank you.”

A memorium for George H.W. Bush

On December 4, 2018, Google changed its logo to grey to pay respect to George H.W. Bush, who passed away on November 30, 2018.

Bush was the 41st US president and also served in the navy as the youngest fighter pilot in World War II.
