Why does Martin Lewis have a CBE?
On October 10, 2022, Martin tweeted that he had been asked to return his OBE – the award he was given in 2014.
However, he revealed that this was because he had been given an even higher honour.
He wrote: “They’re taking my OBE off me! Yep, I got a letter saying now I have been upgraded to a CBE, I need to send the OBE back. So off it goes.”
Martin explained to his followers, that he had been upgraded from Officer of the British Empire, to Commander, joking that this is how he would now like to be referred to.
The TV journalist explained that he had actually received the CBE “a while ago” from King Charles, who was known as Prince Charles then.
He was given the award in the Queen’s New Year Honours for his contributions to broadcasting and consumer rights.
In 2021, The Sunday Times Rich List estimated his net worth to be £123million.
Why is a CBE awarded?
CBE stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

The CBE is the highest ranking order of the British Empire award, other than Knighthood’s/ Damehoods.
The award ranks higher than MBE’s and OBE’s.
The British Government website states: “This is awarded for having a prominent but lesser role at national level, or a leading role at regional level.”
“You can also get one for a distinguished, innovative contribution to any area,” it continues.
You can nominate someone for honour or award and it will be decided by the honours committee.
What are Martin Lewis’ qualifications?
The financial journalist studied Government and Law at the London School of Economics and went on to do his postgraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism at Cardiff University.
He then became a Governor at LSE in 2008.
Martin was awarded an OBE in 2014 for services to consumer rights and to charitable services through the MSE Charity Fund.
He was then promoted to CBE in 2022.
On October 13, 2022, the financial expert won the National Television Award for Best TV Expert.
He won over beloved nominees, including Sir David Attenborough.
