LIDL is popular among shoppers with cheap deals on everything from groceries and homeware to energy-saving gadgets.

The supermarket, which has 950 stores, is changing up shop locations though, in a move that’s both good and bad news.

Below we explain which stores have shut recently, and where it’s planning to open locations.

Which Lidl stores have closed in 2023 and 2024?

Lidl first closed and relocated a few shops in the spring of 2023.

A few closures were due to the poor condition of the buildings and bosses deeming them unfit for purpose, while others came after opening replacement stores elsewhere.

Any workers affected by the changes were offered roles at alternative locations.

Where is Lidl opening stores?

Lidl bosses have also revealed that the chain is looking to open hundreds of new locations.

While it’s yet to confirm the exact locations, it’s aiming to open high street, standalone, mixed-use and shopping centre stores.

Lidl is also looking at retail parks, as well as metropolitan in London and M25.

The full list, of which there are 1,168 locations, includes sites across all areas of Great Britain – including 66 in Scotland, 83 in Yorkshire, 83 in central England, 91 in south London and 42 in south-mid Wales.

The retailer has a store target of 1,100 stores by the end of 2025.

How to save on your supermarket shop

There are plenty of other ways to save on groceries.

You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.

If the food is fresh you’ll have to eat it quickly, or you can freeze it to have another time.

Making a list should also save you money as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.

Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.

This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.

Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes as well where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.
