Named after Sir Sidney Herbert, minister for war during the Crimean conflict, the site is in 19 acres of landscaped gardens.

The hospital treated soldiers injured in both world wars, and it remained in military service until 1977 when it was superseded by the Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital in Woolwich.
