This two-bedroom flat in South East London is part of a converted chapel that was for the officers who occupied the Royal Herbert Hospital, which was built in 1865 to accommodate British soldiers who fought in the Crimean War.

It was designed by Captain Douglas Galton – a cousin to Florence Nightingale – and built using a revolutionary ‘pavilion’ design, where each ward connected to a central corridor in order to maximize light and fresh air.

Named after Sir Sidney Herbert, minister for war during the Crimean conflict, the site is in 19 acres of landscaped gardens.

The design of the building became a template for other hospitals throughout the country.

The hospital treated soldiers injured in both world wars, and it remained in military service until 1977 when it was superseded by the Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital in Woolwich.

Saved from demolition and awarded Grade II listed status, the building has been converted to include an onsite gym, swimming pool and sauna.

It has good access to Blackheath, Greenwich, Woolwich, Eltham and Bluewater shopping centre. The property is on the market for £1.35million via jdm estate agents.
