The sequence of events following the death of Queen Elizabeth II has been meticulously planned by officials. Everyone else is improvising.

While the government and royal family are relying on centuries-old rituals to bid farewell to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, the private sector and everyone else have no blueprint for an event the like of which last took place in 1952, when Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, died.
