Ask Jeeves was a unique search engine started in 1996, which at the time was revolutionary.

People were able to use their natural language and keywords to type a question into the box.

The site was set up in a question and answer format.

Most people will also remember the mascot – Jeeves the Butler, which helped make the branding so recognisable.

In 2006, Jeeves was phased out as it could no longer compete with other search engines on the market.

The site was then rebranded to Ask.com and went back to the simple question and answer format.

One person on Twitter said he used Ask Jeeves: “I used this. Does this make me… old? #JustAsking #AskJeeves”

One user tweeted: “RIP Ask Jeeves, you would’ve loved Google.”

Another search engine that pre dates Google – Yahoo – is still going strong.

Yahoo was founded in 1994 and is the most well known of the pre Google search engines.

Most people don’t know who invented Google.

Other, less memorable ones include: AltaVista, Excite and Dogpile.

This comes as people were horrified to see a 90s trend make a comeback earlier this year.
