WE are on a roll when it comes to breakfast, with sandwiches overtaking pastries as the top choice for a morning meal.

Breakfast buns such as Maccy D’s excellent £2.99 Egg McMuffins now account for 13 per cent of takeaway brekkies.

Experts say it is down to the cost of living crisis – with sarnies proving more filling and representing better value than muffins and croissants.

There are lots of option for the all-important first meal of the day as most fast-food joints and coffee shops offer versions.

I tested them to find which is best value for your breakfast buck, and rate them out of five.

PRET, BACON AND EGG ROLL, £3.50

CHEWY sourdough roll, sizzling salty bacon and a peppery omelette – it totally delivers on flavour and texture.

We tested supermarket beans versus Heinz - but which brand came out on top?

It has the same ingredients as most of the other options but somehow becomes more than the sum of its parts.

Pret knows what it is doing with this sarnie, and it’s well worth the price.

PRET, VEGGIE ROLL, £3.50

BASICALLY an egg sandwich but with mushrooms and tomatoes thrown in for good measure.

It’s very bland and I’d rather ditch the roll and just have an omelette on its own. It’s better than some of the other veggie options I’ve tried in the past but it’s still not great.

BURGER KING, SAUSAGE AND EGG SANDWICH, £3.99

Burger King's offering seems like a breakfast bun got lost somewhere in the process

A PERFECT egg hit followed up by a strong meaty finish.

It tastes great, but it’s like having a burger.

It seems like a breakfast bun got lost somewhere in the process. It’s still good, just not what I’m looking for in my first meal of the day.

CAFFE NERO, SAUSAGE CIABATTA ROLL, £3.65

IF you like to keep things simple, this no-frills sausage bap could be for you.

However, the bread was a little hard and the flavour is lacking. A burnt roll added charcoal to the mix. I’d save your pennies and go to the local greasy spoon.

COSTA, EGG, MUSHROOM AND SPINACH BAP, £3.99

Costa's egg, mushroom and spinach bap tastes better than it looks

HAVING a veggie option for breakfast is great but this looks like something the cat threw up.

It tastes better than it looks but two measly bits of spinach and a handful of mushrooms shoved in the bun can’t disguise the lack of flavour.

I won’t buy it again.

LEON, SAUSAGE AND EGG MUFFIN, £3.99

PRICIER version of McDonald’s Sausage and Egg McMuffin, with actual halved sausages in it.

It comes with an egg and a spicy tomato sauce, which ruins the breakfast vibe.

While it is tasty, Leon has again made it feel more lunch-like than anything else.

MCDONALD’S, BACON AND EGG MCMUFFIN, £2.99

The Sausage and Egg McMuffin is a classic, but I can’t say I’m convinced by the bacon version

THE Sausage and Egg McMuffin is a classic, but I can’t say I’m convinced by the bacon version.

There’s not enough cheese – if I couldn’t see it, I wouldn’t know it was there.

Plus, the salty rasher was barely cooked and has lots of gross white fat on it.

STARBUCKS, ALL-DAY BREAKFAST WRAP, £4.80

Starbucks’ all-day breakfast wrap is a disappointing offering

IT’S a wrap not a bap – and all the worse for it.

The limp tortilla just coats everything with a goo that takes away any flavour from the filling.

Very disappointing offering, I think Starbucks might be better sticking to coffee.
