We reveal which vehicles are most and least likely to be in a crash

Vauxhall Zafiras are the model of car involved in the most crashes, new data has revealed.

There have been 511 vehicles incidents for every 10,000 of the cars, according to data from Rivervale Leasing, which submitted a freedom of information request to the Department of Transport (DfT) to find out which cars are in the most road accidents.

It found that as a car maker Vauxhall top the charts when it comes to the most crashes with three of the top five coming from the English manufacturer.

The Vauxhall Astra has the second highest number of accidents per 10,000 models at 363 with Vauxhall Corsas coming in fourth with 314.

Rivervale Leasing asked the DfT for the number of vehicles involved in accidents by make, model and accident severity for Great Britain between 2015 to 2019.

It then calculated the rate of accidents per 10,000 models registered to represent each manufacturer and model fairly.

The research found that the more examples of each car there are on the road, the higher the likelihood of an accident.

Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise the Vauxhall Corsa – one of the UK’s bestsellers right now – came out as one of the vehicles involved in the most accidents, with more than 33,000 total accidents and 314 accidents per 10,000 cars registered.  

The Ford Fiesta, another popular model, also had 35,602 accidents with over a million and a half vehicles on the road. 

Meanwhile, the Renault Clio was the model of car that had the third highest number of  accidents at 13,971 out of 416,823 in the UK. 

The BMW 3 Series, Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf models all also featured in the top ten.

The safest cars 

Meanwhile, despite only four of the manufacturers listed having more cars on the road, Audi is the safest by rate of accidents.

With only 34,300 of them from just under 1.8million UK Audis, the German manufacturer had under 200 accidents per 10,000 models.

However, overall, Morris cars were found to have the least amount of accidents at just 16 per 10,000 models. 

Austin’s were next with 26 per 10,000 and Tesla at just 28 per 10,000 vehicles.

Luxury manufacturers including Ferrari, Aston Martin and Lotus also made the list of the cars least likely to have an accident.

This is probably due to the lower number of these expensive cars on the road.

At the other end of the scale is, again, Vauxhall with 335 accidents per 10,000, only a fraction worse off than French manufacturer Renault.

This was followed by Peugeot with 43,917 accidents and Ford with 125,664.  

Bud Johnson, Marketing Manager at Rivervale Leasing, said: ‘Ultimately, safety is a top priority for any driver, so you should take steps to avoid an accident in the first place – stick to the speed limit, never tailgate and always keep your eyes on the road.’

Vauxhall declined the opportunity to comment. 

What to do if you’re in an accident

Rivervale Leasing has advised motorists what to do if they ever find themselves in a car accident.  

1) Stop your vehicle as soon as it’s safe to do so.

2) Turn your engine off and put your hazards light on.

3) If anyone is seriously hurt, call an ambulance.

4) Call the police on 101 or 999 depending if it’s an emergency.

5) Take time-stamped photographs of your vehicle and others involved.

6) Get the details of anyone involved in the accident, including witnesses.

7) Take note of the other car’s make, model and licence plate.

8) Exchange your insurance information with the other driver involved.

9) Contact your insurance company and pass on all the information.
