A COUPLE who spent £150k on “the ugliest house on the street” say they’ve doubled its value after learning DIY on YouTube.
Lizzy and Phil Williams snapped up the four-bed semi in Hertfordshire in June 2014.
And after a monumental nine year renovation – they say they now live in their dream home.
Lizzy, 37, who works in marketing, said: “It is a bit of a myriad of research on the internet and asking friends.
“The main house renovation took us around six years as we did most of the work ourselves.
“We fully completed the renovation last year, finishing off the garden.”

After buying the St Albans property the couple moved in six months later to start gutting it.
With holes in the ceiling, dead plants, and fungus growing in the downstairs loo – it was no small project.
But the pair threw themselves into the challenge and harvested DIY knowledge like electrics and plumbing on YouTube.
Going it alone forced them to live in two bedrooms for a whole year whilst they renovated around themselves.

Slowly but surely they transformed the dodgy gaff into a stunning home – and even installed a swimming pool.
They also converted the garage to a utility room, toilet, study and boot room and went underground to turn a void into storage space.
Despite carrying out much of the work themselves, they did get builders in to help build the two storey extension and do some roofing.
In total, Lizzy and Phil spent £150k on the property.
Lizzy explained: “The £40k we had saved lasted us around two years, we borrowed some more money and used our salary for the rest of it.”
They finished the renovations in September 2023 and say they now have the perfect home.
The former mouldy maison has been totally opened up and rooms enlarged.
Sleek wood fittings run throughout and the pair have opted for calming interiors.

Lizzy says her favourite room in the house is the kitchen.
But she also enjoys the home’s “quirky” features including a “hangover bench” to sit in the shower and a TV in the bathroom.
The home now has a massive garden, which extends down to a outbuilding and can chill by the pool on warm evenings.
