Vodafone customers to be hit by roaming charges in one week as EE and Three also plan fees

VODAFONE customers will be hit with roaming charges from next week as other networks including EE and Three gear up to introduce fees abroad.

UK customers were previously able to use their data allowance in the EU without any additional costs, but that changed after Brexit.

Vodafone confirmed in August that it plans to reintroduce charges for Brits abroad from January 26, 2022.

Customers who took out a contract with the network provider after August 21, 2021 will have to pay £2 a day to use data in European Union countries.

But if your agreement with Vodafone is older than that you can continue to roam without extra fees for the time being.

A Vodafone UK spokesperson said: “Next month, some of our customers will pay to roam in Europe, with bundles available from £1 per day.

“Inclusive roaming will still be a part of selected plans. For roaming in Europe, customers can choose a plan that has roaming included, purchase an additional 8 or 15-day roaming pass for the equivalent of just £1 per day, or pay a £2 per day daily rate. 

“This will only affect customers who signed up to a new contract after 11 August 2021, and roaming in the Republic of Ireland will still be included for all customers.

“Customers who signed up to their current contract before 11 August 2021 will not be impacted by these charges while they remain on their price plan. 

“Customers will also be able to set their own limits via our Vodafone Spend Manager, which is free to set up via the My Vodafone App.” 

Other networks including EE and Three will also introduce fees next year.

EE customers can use their phones as normal until March next year.

But after that, there will be a £2 daily roaming charge for anyone who took out a contract after July 7 2021.

Customers signed up to Three have until May 23 before they’re also facing a £2-a-day charge.

But the fee only applies to people who joined Three after October 1, 2021.

If your contract began before that date, you can use up to 12GB of data while in Europe.

Meanwhile, O2 – the UK’s biggest network – has already shaken up its roaming rules.

From August, O2 customers have been billed £3.50 for every gigabyte of data used above a 25GB limit.

Ernest Doku, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com, said: “UK customers travelling to the EU will have to pay £2 a day for access to data and minutes they have already paid for.

“If you’re going on holiday or travelling abroad for a longer time, you can save money by paying for multi-day passes with Vodafone, or Roam Abroad with EE.

“If you’re an existing customer of EE, Vodafone or Three, check your contract to see whether these charges apply to you. If you signed up prior to specific dates, you should be safe.

“When it comes to travelling, don’t leave it until the last minute to check the roaming charges for your destination, and use hotel and cafe Wi-Fi when on holiday where possible, ensuring any public access points are safe and secure before logging on.”
