VIRGIN Media has announced they’re axing their pay-as-you-go (PAYG) plans.

The 123,000 affected customers will be given the option to change their tariff or move providers, according to a Virgin Media spokesperson.

But if they haven’t moved by January 2022, they’ll be cut off altogether.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “Over the last few years, we have seen a 75% reduction in active Pay As You Go use, so have decided to close our Pay As You Go services and focus on providing even greater Pay Monthly and SIM only plans.

“Customers impacted by this change will be notified in a clear, timely way and will be offered an alternative Pay Monthly plan or the option to switch provider.”

How to keep your mobile number when you change tariff or providers

If you want to change your tariff or your provider but keep your current number there are a few extra steps you need to know

Text ‘PAC’ and your date of birth (in DD/MM/YYYY format) to 65075 and you’ll be sent your ‘porting authorisation code’ (PAC) immediately via text. You’ll need this code to switch. E.g. PAC 21/06/1982

You can get a PAC via your Virgin Mobile account online and selecting ‘Switching’ to start the process.

If you’d prefer to switch over the phone, you can also get your PAC by calling Virgin Mobile on 0345 6000 789.

Virgin Mobile says you’ll still be able to request a PAC from it even after its PAYG service has ended.

You need to request the PAC and send it to your new provider within 30 days. The switch itself should take one working day. You won’t need to contact Virgin again.

If you’re a Virgin PAYG customer, you can continue to use the service as normal between now and the cut-off point.

If you find yourself with excess credit after next January, you’ll have twelve months to reclaim your unused credit as cash.

If you want to stay with Virgin Mobile on a different plan, just call its customer service helpline on 0345 6000 789.

Be sure to run down your credit entirely before you make your move.

If you change to a new Virgin Media tariff before your credit is used, you’ll lose it.
