AN URGENT warning has been issued to Brits with leftover Baileys after Christmas – this mistake could cause serious damage.

Fans of the festive liquor may be tempted to pour the remaining drink down their sink but this error can “wreak havoc” on your home.

It's recommended to transfer any leftover Baileys into a container and dispose of it in the bin

Experts at MyBuilder.com explained that emptying the creamy alcohol can wreck pipes underneath.

The handy tradesmen said: “This sort of beverage should never be disposed of in this way. Cream liqueurs have a large fat content, and as such falls into the category of FOG (Fats, Oils, and Greases).

“FOG should never go down the sink, as it sticks to pipes and can cause blockages.

“It’s also what’s responsible for ‘fatbergs’ in our sewers.”

Instead, it’s recommended to transfer any leftover Baileys into a container and dispose of it in the bin.

And, the plumbing gurus also warned Christmas turkey fat shouldn’t be left to swirl down the drain either.

When it cools down, the liquid will harden up and likely lead to blockages further down the line.

An emergency call-out on the big day, or any time across the holiday period could see homeowners forking out hundreds for special rates.

“Half the population admit to pouring FOG down the drain, but don’t be one of them,” added MyBuilder experts.

How to store Baileys

According to the company, Baileys Original lasts “two years from the day of bottling, opened or unopened when stored at the optimum temperature” – from 0C to 25C.

However, there are a variety of Baileys products which have different shelf-lives.

Many Brits believe Baileys needs to be refrigerated but it doesn’t, it can be stored anywhere within the temperatures mentioned above.

However, the manufacturer warns not to leave it in direct sunlight.

It also states on their website that Baileys is at its “optimum taste” before the best best end date – which can be found on the back of the bottle.
